Birch 2025 - 2026
Mrs Amy Holt
Welcome to Birch class
Autumn Term
Our topic for the first half term is ’Clothes’, where we will be developing a range of skills linked to the topic.
In our English and Communication sessions, we will be reading a variety of sensory stories, including ‘Lulu’s clothing’ ‘Alien’s love underpants’ and ‘Froggy gets dressed’. During these stories and within our individual workboxes, we will be developing our reading, fine motor, writing, communication and listening skills. We will also enjoy Intensive Interaction and Attention Autism.
The theme will continue throughout our Art and Science lessons too. In Art we will be using collage, printing and weaving techniques. In science we will be exploring materials and different textures.
In our maths sessions, we will be working on number- place value and geometry learning about shapes and their properties.
Spring Term
Our topic for the first half of the spring term is Spain. Throughout the term, pupils will be developing a wide range of skills linked to this topic.
In our English and Communication lessons, we will cover reading and phonics, writing, fine and gross motor skills, communication and interaction and speaking and listening. Each day, we will focus on a different area of learning.
Lessons will include:
· Sharing a Spanish sensory story
· Taking part in the Wiggle Whilst You Squiggle pre-writing programme linked to Spanish music
· Practical sessions in the hall focusing on communication and interaction
· Sensory and continuous provision-style reading, writing and phonics activities
The topic will also be explored in Art and Geography. In Art, we will be creating Gaudí-inspired artwork both in the classroom and in our forest/outdoor learning area. In Geography, we will learn about where Spain is located, as well as its landscape, climate and culture.
In Science, we will be focusing on seasonal changes through sensory stories and practical outdoor learning activities.
During Maths sessions, we will be working on number, including fractions, as well as measurement, position and direction.
Every day, we will continue to work towards individual targets and enjoy lots of fun and exciting learning opportunities.
Key Information
· PE will take place on Friday mornings. Please ensure your child has a full PE kit in school so we can support independence skills.
· Please send in waterproofs, wellies, hats and gloves (if not already in school), so we are prepared for all weather conditions. A spare set of clothes, including underwear and socks, is also very helpful.
· Please name all items of clothing, particularly jumpers, coats, hats and PE kit.
· Snacks and/or lunch: Please ensure a school lunch is ordered if appropriate. If your child brings snacks, please send enough for the day and include juice if this is their preferred drink.
