Spring Term in Maple Class
We are excited to welcome everyone back for what promises to be a busy, hands-on and skill-building term. We have some fantastic projects lined up that focus on independence, communication and real-world learning.
Here is a look at what Maple Class will be getting up to:
🛠️ Work Experience & Life Skills
This term the students will be taking part in on-site work experience to develop their responsibility and practical skills. Our focus will be on:
-
Gardening: Learning to maintain our outdoor spaces and understanding seasonal growth.
-
School Maintenance: Taking pride in our environment through various cleaning and organisation jobs.
📚 English & Maths
In our core subjects, we are focusing on creativity and inquiry:
-
English: We will be diving into the world of storytelling! Students will be adapting familiar stories, putting their own unique twists on classic tales to improve their narrative writing and reading comprehension.
-
Maths: Our focus is on questioning skills, asking peers and staff a variety of questions to collect data and display the data in various forms.
🌱 Personal Development (PSHE)
In our PSHE sessions, we will be exploring the important concept of Public vs. Private. This helps our students understand appropriate behaviors, conversations and boundaries in different settings, ensuring they feel safe and confident in the world around them.
🚌 Out and About
We are also planning to head out into the community, allowing students to practice their social and communication skills in real-life scenarios - whether that’s ordering a drink at a café or navigating local amenities.
This Summer term in Maple Class we will be focusing on developing independence and real-life skills through a range of exciting and meaningful activities.
We will be taking part in regular community visits, where pupils will have opportunities to explore different local amenities, shops and cafés. During these visits, we will be practicing how to communicate with unfamiliar people, make choices and develop confidence when out in the community. We will also be working on money skills, including recognising coins and notes and practicing simple money exchanges when purchasing items.
Alongside this, Maple Class will be completing a variety of work experience activities based outside of the classroom. These will include jobs around the school grounds, helping to improve and maintain our outdoor areas. These activities will support the development of teamwork, responsibility and pride in our environment.
We are also very excited to be going swimming this term. Swimming sessions will support pupils to practice their personal care skills, such as changing and managing belongings, alongside developing their confidence and ability in the water.
As we move through the term, we will also be focusing on preparing pupils for their next placements. This will include supporting pupils with transition work, discussing changes and attending transition visits to help ensure they feel confident and well-prepared for the next stage of their journey.
We are looking forward to a busy and engaging term, full of practical learning experiences that support independence, confidence and life skills.
