Saplings 2025 - 2026
Miss Laura Rose
The Reception year is a very exciting time of change for both parents and our children. During this year, we will all work as a team to ensure that your child flourishes through a fun, stimulating and active environment. The experiences we provide will be designed to ensure that every child reaches their full potential in all aspects of the curriculum. We will be encouraging your child to become an independent learner and take risks as they embark upon new challenges. We pride ourselves in offering a nurturing, language rich learning environment that teaches the essential skills necessary to build positive relationships and prepare them for their future.
This half term our topic is ‘At the Farm and Amazing Animals’. During this topic, the children will learn all about the role of the farmer and all about the different farm animals that might be found on the farm. As the term progresses, the children will also look at zoo animals and talk about their favourites. They will have the opportunity to meet some farm animals and even have a visit from Gramps the tortoise!
During our daily Literacy and Communication Sessions, the children will be looking at several sensory stories that focus on farm animals and the role of the farmer. They will explore day to day life on the farm and all the different jobs that must be done to look after the different animals each day. Our Sensory stories this term will be ‘A Squash and a Squeeze, Farmer Duck and Dear Zoo’. After listening to each story, the children will have the opportunity to complete a range of activities linked to each of the stories. The children will also have the opportunity to develop their knowledge of animals further through a range of animal themed action songs which we will sing each day during our daily singing sessions. Another story that the children will be listening to is ‘Noah’s Ark’ during our weekly RE sessions.
During our daily Maths sessions, the children will be exploring and ordering numbers to 5 and 10 (when ready) through a range of number songs and themed activities in the different continuous provision areas which will be modelled and led by staff. As the term develops, the children will learn how to group animals and create groups of different amounts by adding one more. They will learn how to create repeating patterns using their favourite animals. The children will also be exploring measurement and will learn about big and small animals and how to compare them.
During our afternoon sessions, the children will continue their work on animals and will have the opportunity to create a range of animal themed crafts, explore the role of the farmer further in our Saplings Farm which has been set up in class and venture out into the local community to look at different animals.
Every day we will continue to work on our individual targets and enjoy lots of fun and exciting ways to learn!
